How to Stream a Class on Twitch and YouTube at Once
A practical guide for educators streaming a class to Twitch and YouTube simultaneously: student remote attendance, screen sharing, recording for replay, and the operating tips that keep classes engaging.
The Real Use Case
A high school teacher streaming a literature class for both in-person students who missed the day and a small public audience interested in the subject. A college lecturer running a seminar for enrolled students with a public secondary audience. A bootcamp instructor running a coding class with simultaneous live and replay distribution.
Education is one of the most underexploited live streaming use cases. Classes are inherently structured, valuable as evergreen content, and benefit from cross-platform distribution. But the streaming experience for educators is mostly built on Zoom, designed for closed meetings, not for public broadcast.
This post is about what changes when you stream a class properly: to YouTube and Twitch (or one or two), with a recording, with student interaction, with the production polish that makes the class watchable as a recorded lecture later.

The Three-Layout Pattern
Education streams settle into three layouts in rotation:
1. Teacher Solo (Spotlight)
Just you, full screen. Use for:
Opening the class
Announcements
Lecturing without slides
Closing remarks
Keeps focus on you when you're the substance.
2. Slides + Teacher (Showtime or Pip)
Screen share + your camera. Use for:
Working through slides
Demoing software
Solving problems on a virtual whiteboard
Walking through reading material
This is the bread and butter of most class segments.
3. Discussion (Half Screen or Grid)
Teacher + 2–3 students on camera. Use for:
Group discussion
Student presentations
Q&A segments
Collaborative problem-solving
Switches the dynamic from "lecture" to "seminar." Increases engagement signals (comments, chat, return-viewer rate).

Setup Walkthrough
Step 1: Create a Live Studio Stream
In your dashboard, Create Live Stream → Live Studio. Name it after the class, English 101, Physics for Beginners, Web Dev Bootcamp Cohort 4.
Landscape 16:9, HD 1080p 30fps.
Step 2: Add Yourself
Click Sources → Add Camera. Pick the camera and microphone. Use a USB headset or external mic, class audio is everything.
Step 3: Build Your Layouts
Pre-build:
Teacher Solo: Spotlight layout, just your camera
Slides + Teacher: Showtime layout, slides on one side, your camera on the other (or Pip if you want slides full-screen with you in the corner)
Discussion: Half Screen for 3 people, or Grid for 4+
Switch between them with one click during class.
Step 4: Add Branding
Open the Composition Editor. Add:
School / institution / your channel logo
Course name lower-third (e.g., "English 101, Module 3: The Romantic Poets")
Optional: a "Today's Topic" overlay you update per class
Save it as an Overlay Template named after the course so you can reuse it weekly.
Step 5: Connect Destinations
Add YouTube and Twitch (or your chosen platforms). For education specifically:
YouTube: primary destination. Long-form content with replay value. Set the title clearly per class.
Twitch: secondary, for the live-engagement audience. Twitch's chat culture works well for educational Q&A.
Custom RTMP: if your school has its own learning management system (LMS) embed.
Step 6: Invite Students Who'll Be On Camera
Send the invite link to any students who'll join on camera. Brief them on:
Microphone, camera, headphones expectations
When in the class they'll be on (e.g., "during the discussion segment")
Whether they're comfortable being on the public broadcast
If a student isn't comfortable being public, don't put them on camera.
Step 7: Turn On Recording
Record to Library is on. The class becomes a recording you can post as a replay.
Step 8: Go Live
Click Go Live. Class starts.
Class Structure That Works on Stream
Streaming changes how you should structure class time. A 90-minute college lecture with no breaks is brutal to watch live or as replay. Some structural adjustments:
Segment your class
Break a 90-minute class into 4–6 segments of 12–20 minutes each. Each segment has:
A clear topic
A defined opening hook ("today we're solving...")
A change-of-pace activity (group discussion, problem solving, brief Q&A)
A close that signals what's next
This makes both the live experience and the replay vastly more engaging.
Use layout switches as segment markers
Switch from Solo to Slides at the start of a presentation segment. Switch to Discussion when you bring students on. Switch back to Solo for closing.
The layout becomes a visual signal of segment changes. Viewers, live and replay, track the rhythm.
Build in chat-engagement moments
Plan two or three moments per class to ask the chat a question. "What did you think of last week's reading?" "Who has a guess at why this works?" Pause for 60 seconds, read responses, address them by name.
This is the difference between "a class being broadcast" and "a class actively happening on the stream."
Have a Q&A segment
The last 10 minutes of class is Q&A. Bring on student questioners (or just read chat questions). Address public viewers' questions too if they're substantive.
Replay Strategy
The recording is half the value. After class:
Trim any pre-class chitchat from the master recording
Add chapter markers in YouTube for each segment
Tag the recording with the course name and module
Post to your YouTube playlist for the course
Promote in your school's LMS or in your newsletter
Over a semester, you build a YouTube playlist that becomes a free, public course. New students discover it. Old students re-watch it. Other educators reference it. The class compounds.
Use Cases by Educator Type
High school teacher
Focus on production simplicity. One layout switch (Solo → Slides). Keep it short, 30–45 minutes max. Prioritize replay quality over live engagement.
College / university lecturer
Use multiple layouts. Bring on students for discussion. Multi-stream YouTube + your university's LMS. The recordings build into a public-facing course over years.
Bootcamp instructor
Heavy use of screen share for code demos. Pip layout (code full-screen, you in corner) for most of the class. Twitch as primary platform, bootcamp students align well with Twitch's chat culture.
Online educator / course creator
Treat each live class as both delivery and content marketing. Multistream to YouTube + Twitch + LinkedIn (if B2B). The replays drive course sign-ups for paid versions.
Tips for Class-Specific Engagement
Address chat by name. "Sarah, that's a great question, let me show you why X."
Don't ignore live attendance. A student in chat watching your live class is more engaged than one watching the replay. Reward them with attention.
Use polls. "Which approach do you think is right, A, B, or C?" Reveals understanding and signals engagement.
Don't apologize for being on camera. New educators apologize for "this being awkward" or "not being good at this." Don't. Confidence is part of teaching.
Treat the camera as the back of the room. Look at it occasionally. Don't pretend it's not there.
Get Started
For your first streamed class, keep it simple. One layout switch (Solo → Slides). 45-minute class. No on-camera students yet. Get comfortable with the platform.
Add complexity over the semester as you settle into the rhythm.
