Switching Between Live Channel and Live Studio Mid-Stream

Introduction

A common pattern in professional broadcasting: a 24/7 channel runs in the background, and the live show "cuts in" at scheduled times, taking over the channel's air during the live segment, then returning to the channel programming when the show ends.

This is how TV news works (rolling programming + breaking news cut-ins). It's how some 24/7 worship channels work (continuous music + Sunday service cut-ins). It's how sports networks work (recap content + live game cut-ins).

What You'll Build

A single stream that:

Runs a Live Channel (24/7 looping playlist or scheduled programming) by default
Cuts to a Live Studio show at scheduled times
Returns to the Live Channel when the live show ends
Maintains the same stream URL on every destination, viewers don't have to switch streams

How the Switching Works

There are two patterns:

Pattern 1: Calendar-driven cut-ins

You program a Scheduled Stream where the calendar's default content is your 24/7 programming, and specific blocks call for live studio takeover.

When the calendar reaches a live block, the stream switches to live studio output. When the block ends, it returns to scheduled content.

This is automatic, set up the calendar, run it, the cut-ins happen on time forever.

Pattern 2: Manual cut-ins

You run a Live Channel as your default. When you want to cut to a live show, you switch the stream into Live Studio mode. When done, switch back.

This is manual but flexible, useful for unscheduled cut-ins (breaking news, special announcements).

Setup: Calendar-Driven Cut-Ins

Step 1: Create a Scheduled Stream

In your dashboard, Create Live Stream → Scheduled Stream.

This is the foundation: a stream whose programming is calendar-driven.

Step 2: Set Up Default Programming

Configure the calendar's default content, what plays during gaps between scheduled blocks.

For example:

A 24/7 worship music playlist
A rolling news clip loop
An evergreen content rotation

This is what the stream plays when nothing more specific is scheduled.

Step 3: Add Live Show Blocks

For each scheduled live show, add a calendar block of type Live Studio.

Example for a church:

Sunday 11am–12pm: Live Studio block (the morning service)
Wednesday 7pm–8pm: Live Studio block (Bible study)
All other times, default 24/7 worship playlist

When the Sunday 11am block fires, the stream switches to live studio mode. The pastor goes live, the camera operator runs the layouts. At 12pm, the block ends and the stream returns to the worship playlist.

Step 4: Configure Live Studio for Each Block

Each Live Studio block points to a Live Studio configuration:

Sources (cameras, screen shares, RTMP feeds)
Layouts pre-built
Composition Editor branding
Optional: who has access to invite guests during the block

When the block fires, the live studio is ready to operate.

Step 5: Add Destinations (Once)

Connect YouTube, Twitch, Facebook, etc. once at the stream level. Both the Live Channel and Live Studio modes broadcast to the same destinations.

Viewers tune in to one URL and see whatever's playing, playlist content most of the time, the live show during scheduled blocks.

Step 6: Go Live

Click Go Live on the stream. The Calendar takes over. Default content plays. Scheduled blocks fire on time.

Setup: Manual Cut-Ins

For unscheduled cut-ins (breaking news, last-minute special):

Step 1: Run a Live Channel

Set up a Live Channel as you normally would, playlist, optional shuffle, destinations connected.

Step 2: Set Up a Live Studio Configuration

Pre-build your Live Studio setup (sources, layouts, branding) and have it ready, but don't go live with it yet.

Step 3: When You Want to Cut In

When a moment calls for live studio:

Use the Background Playlist behavior to keep your Live Channel running behind the Live Studio
Switch to Live Studio mode
Go live with the studio output
The stream output cuts to live studio; behind the scenes, the Live Channel stays warm

Step 4: When Done

Switch back to Live Channel mode. The stream returns to your playlist programming.

Use Cases

Church with 24/7 worship + Sunday service

Default: 24/7 worship music playlist. Scheduled cut-ins: Sunday 11am service, Wednesday 7pm Bible study, special holiday services.

Viewers always have the channel; live services cut in on schedule.

News channel with recap + live cut-ins

Default: rolling news clip playlist. Manual cut-ins: breaking news, press conferences, scheduled commentary.

Viewers can tune in any time; major news takes over the air when it happens.

Music channel with 24/7 mix + DJ sets

Default: 24/7 curated music playlist. Scheduled cut-ins: live DJ sets at peak times.

The music plays continuously; live DJ sessions run in their scheduled windows.

Educational channel with course replays + live classes

Default: 24/7 looping replays of past classes. Scheduled cut-ins: live class sessions on the regular schedule.

New viewers always have content; enrolled students get the live experience.

Tips

Match production identity across modes. The Live Channel and Live Studio should feel like the same channel. Same logo, same colors, same brand. Use Overlay Templates to maintain consistency.
Lead-in graphics. The 60 seconds before a live cut-in is a great moment for a "live show starting" graphic. Add it as a brief transitional block.
Test the switches. Before relying on calendar-driven cut-ins, run a test cut-in to confirm it switches cleanly.
Promote the schedule. Tell viewers when live shows happen. "Watch the live service at 11am Sunday on the same channel."

Common Questions

Does the stream URL change when it cuts to Live Studio? No. Same URL on every destination. Viewers don't have to switch.

What if my Live Studio isn't ready when the calendar block fires? The block plays a fallback (like a "show starts in a moment" graphic) until the live studio comes online. Configure the fallback in your Live Studio block settings.

Can I have multiple Live Studio blocks scheduled per day? Yes. Calendar supports any number. Each block is independent.

What happens to viewers tuning in mid-cut-in? They see the live show. When it ends, they see whatever the calendar transitions to. Same URL throughout.
