How to Run a 24/7 News Desk With Live Cut-Ins
How small news organizations and independent journalists run a 24/7 news channel: rolling clip loop as the base, live anchor desk cut-ins for breaking stories, and the production setup behind it.
A Format That Was Out of Reach
A 24/7 news channel used to require a TV station's worth of equipment, staff, and infrastructure. The barrier wasn't talent, independent journalists with strong reporting can produce great content. The barrier was production: who runs the channel between live segments, how do you cut in for breaking news, how do you keep it on the air around the clock.
The format is now within reach for small news organizations and independent journalists. A 24/7 rolling-clip loop as the channel's base. Live anchor-desk cut-ins for breaking news, scheduled segments, and analysis. All from a browser.
This post covers how.
What This Format Looks Like
A typical day on a small 24/7 news channel:
Background loop: rotating clips of recent reporting, evergreen explainers, interviews, recap segments
6am, 12pm, 6pm: scheduled live anchor segments, 30-minute news desks with the day's stories
Breaking news: live cut-ins as stories develop
9pm: scheduled live analysis show, guest panelists discussing the day
Otherwise: the loop continues, viewers can tune in any time and find content
This pattern works across news verticals: politics, tech, sports, business, regional news, niche reporting.
What You'll Build
A single stream that runs 24/7 and supports:
A rolling content loop as the default
Live anchor cut-ins at scheduled times
Breaking news cut-ins at unscheduled times
Branded production identity: looks like a news channel, not a YouTube live
Setup
Step 1: Build the Background Library
Your library should contain:
Reporting clips: 3–8 minutes each, your most-recent stories
Explainers: 5–15 minute deeper dives on context and background
Interviews: full or excerpted conversations with sources
Recap segments: daily/weekly wrap-ups
Promotional / channel ID clips: short branded interstitials
For a strong loop, start with 30+ hours of varied content. Rotate in new pieces continuously.
Step 2: Create the Stream
Create Live Stream → Scheduled Stream. Name it for your channel.
Landscape 16:9, HD 1080p 30fps.
Step 3: Configure the Default Content
In the Calendar settings, set default content to a playlist of your background library. Enable Shuffle so viewers don't see the same clip in the same order.
This is what plays whenever no live block is firing.
Step 4: Schedule Your Live Anchor Segments
For each daily live segment, add a Live Studio block on the calendar:
6am Morning Brief: 30 minutes, daily
12pm Midday Update: 30 minutes, weekdays
6pm Evening Edition: 30 minutes, weekdays
9pm Analysis Show: 60 minutes, weekdays
Set them as recurring weekly. They run themselves.
For each block, configure the Live Studio source list (anchor camera, remote correspondent placeholders, screen share for graphics).
Step 5: Build Your Anchor Production
For each live segment, pre-build the layouts:
Anchor solo (Spotlight): anchor on camera, full screen, for opening and closing
Anchor + correspondent (Half Screen): anchor with a remote correspondent
Anchor + graphic (Showtime): anchor with a screen-shared graphic, chart, or photo
Two-anchor (Half Screen): for shows with co-anchors
For details see Live Studio Layouts Explained.
Step 6: Build the Branded Composition
Open the Composition Editor. Add:
News channel logo (upper-left, classic newsroom placement)
Lower-third bars for headlines, breaking-news markers, anchor names
A clock (top-right) showing local or UTC time
A ticker overlay at the bottom (subtle, with rolling headlines)
Save as an Overlay Template, News Channel Default.
Step 7: Connect Destinations
For news streams, prioritize:
YouTube Live: long-form, replay value, search discoverability
Twitter/X Live (custom RTMP), news-native audience
Facebook Live: older demographic
Custom RTMP to your own website: if you publish news on a website with embedded video
Multi-stream to all relevant platforms. See The Ultimate Multistreaming Guide for 2026.
Step 8: Go Live
Click Go Live. The Calendar takes over. The clip loop runs by default. Live segments fire on schedule. Breaking news cut-ins handled manually.
Operating the Channel
Daily Routine
Morning (5–6am):
Review overnight news
Update the morning brief outline
Test the anchor camera and graphics
Pre-load any video clips you'll show during the brief
Go live at 6am with the Morning Brief block (auto-fired by calendar)
Throughout the day:
Refresh the background library with new reporting
Pre-build graphics for the next live segments
Monitor for breaking news
Breaking news (anytime):
Use Play Now to switch to a "breaking news" block, OR
Manually go live with Live Studio for an unscheduled cut-in
Run the breaking-news segment
Return to scheduled programming
Evening (5–6pm):
Update the evening edition outline
Run Evening Edition at 6pm
Run Analysis Show at 9pm
Overnight:
The channel runs on the loop and shuffle
Optional: schedule a "while you slept" recap clip in the early morning
Roles Required
A small news channel can run with:
One anchor (you), fronts the live segments
One producer / clip-maker: keeps the library fresh, prepares graphics, handles breaking news cut-ins
Optional: correspondents who join via invite links for specific stories
Two people can sustain a small 24/7 news channel. One person can sustain a smaller version with shorter live windows.
What Makes This Work
The loop carries you between live segments. Viewers tuning in at 3am see content; they don't see "channel offline."
Live segments add freshness without requiring 24-hour live coverage. You're producing maybe 3 hours of live content a day.
Breaking news cut-ins are easy. Your live studio is ready; you just go live whenever a story develops.
The recordings of live segments become tomorrow's loop content. Each day's anchor work becomes evergreen library content.
Editorial Considerations
A few things worth thinking about as you build:
Update frequency. A news channel that recycles week-old content feels stale. Refresh the loop daily.
Breaking news threshold. Decide what merits a live cut-in. If everything is breaking news, nothing is.
Source quality. Independent news lives or dies on credibility. Be careful, cite sources, correct quickly.
Segment lengths. Short segments (3–5 min) loop better than long ones (15+). Mix the lengths.
Get Started
Pick your news vertical (regional, niche, ideological, beat-specific) and start building the library. 30 hours of content lets you launch credibly.
Then schedule one daily live anchor segment. Just one. Build from there.
A year in, your channel could be a real alternative to legacy news in your niche.
